For a while in the afternoon before the event, the prospect of the Comedy Night was a massive downer. Not enough tickets pre-sold, very little contact with a venue we haven’t used before, no A board to put outside because it is damaged – as volunteers this is not how we want to be feeling, especially about an event that is meant to make us laugh. It was no laughing matter. But miracles do happen!
People got behind the event and door sales were decent. As the wines and beers were served the venue team started to look less glum and as organisers we started to breathe again.
And then the ACTS came on. Wow! These comedians know what they are doing. They work the room. They get the laughs. They make a Friday night a proper Friday night out.
And they loved the Cheadle Club as a venue as much as we did. It was perfect for this type of event. The artists want to come back again and see if they can ‘break Cheadle’ 🤣.
So by the end we chatted with the Cheadle Club venue guys and Rob Coleman the compere and collectively pronounced the event a success and something we should DEFINITELY do again next year. Unlikely candidates (judgemental, I know) from the audience came up and said they’d never been to live comedy before, had supported many of the Arts Festival events and thought they’d give it a try (bless them 🥰) – and LOVED IT ❤️❤️
What a rollercoaster of emotions, but what a joy to leave the event feeling so positive.
